Essay Contest

This year, once again, the Education Committee held its annual essay contest at a local Middle School. Sixth and seventh grade contest participants were given the option to prepare an original essay explaining:

  • the relevance of a Mary McLeod Bethune quote in the 21st century;
  • who is an important black woman they admire and why; or
  • how the life and achievements of a black female educator or activist has made a difference in the student's community.

The Committee received over 100 inspirational and well-thought-out essays. In honor of Women's History Month, we planned to host a recognition program for the winners on March 23. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was cancelled.
In late May, the Education Committee awarded each winner (listed below) a gift card prize and certificate. Lavender Petty shared a recording of her speech for section members to enjoy.

L. Petty - 1st Place
H. Day - 2nd Place
J. Dayne - 3rd Place

Congratulations to them all!!!
